ABS Capital City, State and National Population Projections from 2022 to 2071

By Anuhhav Tewari

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) recently released the capital city, state and national level population projections from 2022 to 2071.

These projections illustrate what would happen to Australia’s population if assumed levels of the components of population change (births, deaths and migration) were to occur between 2022 and 2071.

Some interesting findings from the publication are:

  • Australia’s population in 2022 (26 million) is projected to reach between 34.3 and 45.9 million people by 2071. However, if we assume zero net overseas migration, the population will decline to 23.9 million in 2071 (on account of more overall deaths than births in the future).
  • At 30 June 2022, 67% of Australians lived in capital cities. This proportion is projected to increase to 68% by 2032.
  • Sydney is projected to remain constant or increase from 65% of the state’s population in 2022 to 66% in 2032.
  • Melbourne is projected to remain constant or increase from 76% of Victoria in 2022 to 77% in 2032.
  • Melbourne is projected to be the largest city in Australia by 2071 with a projected population between 6.5 million and 9.9 million, surpassing Sydney between 2032 and 2046.
