1. 2021 Census data relevant to schools has now been released
The first tranche of the 2021 Census data was released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on 28 June 2022. This release includes information about some data variables which are relevant to the planning and management activities at schools including the count of persons attending an education institution by the type of institution. We have summarised some of this data in the table below.

Key observations:

  • As per the 2021 Census, 64% of all school going persons attend a Government school, 21% attend a Catholic school, and the balance 15% attend Independent schools. These ratios have remained fairly consistent between 2016 and 2021
  • Between 2016 and 2021, the number of children attending Independent schools has grown at the fastest rate (12.7%), this is followed by Government schools (9.9%), and lastly, Catholic schools (6.5%)
